macOS Big Sur instant expert guide

With Big Sur, Apple has literally tured macOS up to 11 with a fresh look and plenty of new features. After nearly 20 years of macOS 10 (or Mac OSX), Big Sur is the operating system that makes the trasition into macOS 11 and i've got all of the insight you need to become an instant expert in usig the new system software. The Big Sur update has taken its time to roll out. but the new features were certainly worth the wait. As well as a touched-up aesthetic, Big Sur comprises of a huge Safari overhaul, more detailed widgets, the introduction of a ios-style control center in the menu bar plus additional enhancements to a wide rage of other apps, including Maps, App Store and Photos.

Prepare your Mac for Big Sur

check compatibility

before preparing your Mac for Big Sur, check that you can actually run it. Go to Apple>About This Mac>Overview and esure that it meets the reguirmets.

Chances are, your Mac can run macOS Big Sur The following models are supported:
MacBook (2015 or later)
MacBook Air (2013 or later)
MacBook Pro (Late 2013 or later)
Mac mini (2014 or later)
iMac (2014 or later)
iMac Pro (2017 or later)
Mac Pro (2013 or later)
To see which model you have, click the Apple icon in your menu bar and choose About This Mac.

Clear some space

still in About This Mac Winndow, click on Storage>Mange and then work through the various suggested steps to free up space on your Mac's HD, including moving files to iCloud and deleting older ones.

Remove old apps

Click on 'Application' in the sidebar and worh through the list of apps install on your Mac. Some apps take up quite a bit of space so remove any you don't need by highlighting them and clicking 'Delete'.

Back up Mac

Connect a sizeable portable HD to your Mac and go to System Preferences>Time Machine. Click 'Select Disk' choose your connected HD and then wait for your Mac to be backed up in case of emergency.
